All About Brandon, FL

Brandon is an unincorporated community in Hillsborough County, Florida. It got its start in 1857 when John Brandon came to Fort Brooke from Mississippi with his family. He purchased 40 acres in what is now Brandon, another 160 acres later, and named it all after himself. His house with his second wife was located on the future corner of Knights Avenue and Victoria Street, and he donated the land where the New Hope Church was built. The church doubled as the town’s first school.

The Florida Central and Peninsular Railroad came through Brandon in 1890, and the community has grown in spurts since then, starting with the first general store on the corner of Moon Avenue and Victoria Street in 1905 and a school on Parsons Avenue. The teachers could board with Mrs. Brandon. In 1922, Brandon’s population was only 100 people, but today it’s over 100,000. It had two major booms in the late ‘50s and the ‘80s thanks to its convenient location to Tampa and the new I-75 completed in 1986.

Today, the town occupies 35 square miles, has a population of 114,626, and includes the neighborhoods of Barrington Oaks East, Brandon Hills, Kensington Estates, La Viva, and Limona.
