A Brief History of Riverview

Riverview’s story begins along the banks of the Alafia River, with settlers arriving as early as the 1830s to an area then known as Peru, a name derived from an indigenous word meaning “straight part of the river.” The community on the north shore of the Alafia grew steadily through the late 1800s, spurred in part by the discovery of phosphate nearby. Seeing economic potential in the growing settlement, Isham E. Copeland and F.S. Morrison formally platted Riverview on July 14, 1891, and a post office followed later that year.

The area eventually absorbed the older Peru settlement, and by the early 1940s the name Riverview was officially adopted by the post office, putting an end to years of confusion over mail delivery. The community continued to grow through the 20th century, shaped by agriculture, a strong sense of neighborly identity, and its unique position along the river. In 1921, Emmet and Myrtle Tope established Florida’s first commercial poultry farm right here in Riverview, a milestone that speaks to the entrepreneurial spirit that has always defined this area.

Today, Riverview looks very different from that quiet riverside settlement. The population reached 107,396 in the 2020 census, nearly doubling from the 71,050 recorded just a decade earlier. That rapid growth reflects what so many families have discovered: Riverview is a place where community, convenience, and natural beauty come together in a way that is hard to find anywhere else in the Tampa Bay region.

Living and Working in Riverview

Riverview has become one of Hillsborough County’s most desirable places to call home, and it is easy to see why. With beaches to the west and acres of nature preserves to the east, residents enjoy a central location that provides easy access to major employers, top-ranked schools, and Tampa entertainment, all while maintaining a relaxed, suburban feel.

Hillsborough County Public Schools serve the area with a B-plus rating from Niche, ranking it the second-best district in Tampa, and the University of South Florida is just 17 miles away. For families with children at every stage of life, Riverview offers the kind of educational foundation that is hard to overlook. Newer communities, affordable housing options compared to Tampa proper, and a growing selection of local businesses make Riverview an increasingly popular choice for young families and long-time Florida residents alike.
